Barberton, Mpumalanga

The old ways, handed on.

Master hands-on studio craft, from grinding local pigments to pulling paper sheets, guided by practicing artisans in our Barberton workshops.

Authentic studio craft

Self-reliance in the studio

BArts Academy prepares practicing artists and craft makers to build their own tools, harvest local riverbed reeds, and grind raw earth into pure oil paint.

As the educational arm of the Barberton Innovative Artist Society, we pass along time-honored workshop recipes and hand-bound traditions without commercial shortcuts.

Chapters of study

Traditional workshop disciplines

Six core chapters teaching authentic studio skills from raw material preparation to finished heirloom handiwork across all disciplines.

Pigments and paints

Papermaking and binding

Pottery and textiles

Harvest raw ochres and slate to grind custom oil pigments and natural binders on glass slabs.

Shape raw clay on the wheel, formulate natural glazes, and practice traditional mending and dyeing.

Pull organic deckle sheets from wooden vats using mulberry bark, cotton rag, and local reeds.

Studio notebook entry

Pull the deckle smoothly from the vat, let the excess water drain, and trust the weight in your hands.
